Maloko came from the Tribe of the Summer's Setting Sun, where he was the son of Tulana and the Tribe Leader. Amaryllis was on the Spring Hunts, sponsored by Indy, when she came upon Maloko hunting with his friends Tilmont and Grak'ta. Then named Brek'nal, Maloko and his friends took Amaryllis and Kilani to meet the adults in his small Tribe. The adults, one of whom was Tulana, were very pleased to meet the pair, and they explained to Amaryllis that they often allowed pups to leave them and train with a human trainer, giving the pup more opportunities than they would have just staying in the Tribe. Amaryllis decided to take Brek'nal, giving him the trainer name Maloko.
Having grown up in a tribe that was just like a small family, Maloko knows little or nothing about hatred and malevolence. Coming to live with Amaryllis, he was introduced to these things, but he didn't understand the concepts. Jealousy, vicious cunning, and general feuding passed by him every once and a while, but he looked upon it as though it were a game. He is kind to everyone, no matter what they say or do, because of this naieve innocence. 'If only everyone could be like that,' Kilani says.
Maloko has some very good friends, several of which are Moreira, Aris, Ford, and Chanda, among many others. He's sure to meet more later, because his happy demeanor is much appreciated.
